Briefly about our monastery

Novo-Tikhvinsky convent… A mere one hundred years ago, these words would make every inhabitant of Ekaterinburg think of majestic cathedrals surrounded by trees, well-groomed gardens, and dozens of solid buildings where more than 1,000 sisters prayed, painted icons, sewed vestments, and mastered a variety of scholarly pursuits - in other words, a place where life was peaceful and merciful, strenuous and spiritual.
It was in this convent where the revered Tikhvinskaya icon of the Most Holy Theotokos was held. It drew the citizens of the entire city of Ekaterinburg and the guests from different parts of the province to its annual celebration. In the 1920s, Novo-Tikhvinsky convent, like many other convents and monasteries in Russia, was subjected to tragic devastation.

1994 saw the beginning of the convent’s revival. By God’s grace, the monastery, established under the guidance of spiritual father schemaarchimandrite Avraam (Reidman), is led today by Mother Superior igumenija Domnika (Korobeinikova).
Initially a new resident is given an opportunity to assess her strength and to become certain of the immutability of her determination to leave the world and devote her entire life to God. Only twelve or eighteen months later, she is taken in as a novice. What brings a future nun to the convent is her conscious aspiration to lead a virtuous life aimed at purifying her heart. This is why life at a monastery consists of daily labor for the benefit of her soul: prayer, implicit obedience, reading the works of the Church Fathers, taking part in the divine sacraments, and Church service.

Today, as in the past centuries, the lives of the sisters are entirely dedicated to prayer and service of neighbor. The new churches are built and the old ones are renovated. Continuing the tradition of charity and enlightenment, the convent patronizes a free refectory. Once again, the nuns here are painting icons, sewing and embroidering, singing in the church choir - as it was done many years ago. Along with the traditional responsibilities, some new ones have emerged: the sisters translate and publish spiritual literature, and study the history of both the convent and the diocese. There are two monastic metochions of the convent: one is located in the village of Merkushino near the town of Verkhoturie, and the other one is in the settlement of Elizavet, a remote region of Ekaterinburg.
The revered Tikhvinskaya icon of the Most Holy Theotokos - a precise copy of the ancient wonders-working image – resides here, as well as the holy relics of Venerable Vasilisk of Siberia and Hieromartyr Konstantin Merkushinsky. Parts of the relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, the Great-Martyr Panteleimon, the Righteous Warrior Theodor Ushakov, Saints of the Kiev Caves and other saints’ relics also rest here.
